SUBJECT: ACETYLENE GAS SHORTAGE
DATE: April 5, 2011
URGENT…PLEASE READ!!
SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT REGARDING ACETYLENE GAS SHORTAGE
The Situation:
As you may have already heard, Carbide Industries, located in Kentucky, experienced a major fire at its manufacturing facility last month.
As a result, the production of Calcium Carbide, the major ingredient for producing Acetylene gas, has stopped at this plant.
For Gas Suppliers that use
calcium carbide in their production process, we expect to see shortages in the availability of Acetylene gas over the coming months.
It is unclear as to how long the shortages will last, but we do know there is no global shortage of calcium carbide and there are other manufacturers ramping up their production to supply the U.S. demand.
Please note - there are Gas Suppliers that use other production processes to produce acetylene gas without using calcium carbide and we advise our Distributors to check with their local Gas Supplier to see if they will be affected.
So, with all that being said, we are prepared to support our customers and Service Technicians with alternative products to meet their equipment needs.
Solutions
:
HVAC/R
Service Technicians currently using Oxyacetylene outfits can substitute Acetylene for LP gas, either MAP//Pro (Propylene) or Propane.
Option 1:
Part# FV600 Fuel Valve Adapter
Technicians can use our new Fuel Valve Adapter to connect their Uniweld MC Acetylene Regulator to a Disposable Fuel Cylinder, thereby converting a standard Oxyacetylene outfit
to an Oxy/Fuel outfit that combines LP gas with oxygen.
Note:
All Uniweld acetylene regulator diaphragms and seals are compatible for use with either Propylene (MAP//Pro) or Propane fuel gas.
WARNING!
–
Fuel compatibility with other manufacturer’s acetylene regulators must be determined prior to using the FV600 Fuel Valve Adaptor.
It is recommended to use grade ‘T’ hose (H32AT) with Propylene (MAP//Pro) or Propane fuel gas.
If using grade ‘R’ hose (H32A) with Propylene (MAP//Pro) or Propane, it must never be used in extremely
cold temperatures below -10 F. This may cause the fuel gas to liquefy and act as a solvent that will attack the internal hose material. Whichever hose is used, always bleed off the remaining fuel gas after every use.
